Kate 第一次在海外總公司的同事面前匯報，完成後終於鬆一口氣，立即問身邊的外籍上司，自己的表現如何：”How do you think of the presentation?”
上司一時反應不來，想了想就笑了，並糾正了 Kate 這句說話有錯處。
中文我們會問「你覺得怎樣？」，不過翻譯成英語時，「怎樣」不一定是用 “How” 來表達。以下這 4 組問句，你又用對疑問詞了嗎？
疑問 1：How do you think of the presentation?
“How” 是用來問「方法」或者「如何」，例如大家都熟悉的 “How are you?”，是問對方最近過得如何；“How can I go to Mongkok?” 就是問到達旺角的方法。
以上所講的例子中，問對方 “How do you think”，等於問「你怎樣思考？」或者「你如何想到…？」，對方心想，當然是用腦去思考啊！聽起來就怪怪的。
Kate 想問的，其實是上司對她的匯報「有甚麼看法」，所以應該用 “What”：

不少在中文翻譯成「怎樣」的句子，都會令人誤用了 “How”。例如朋友搬新居了，你想問對方附近的環境怎樣，就應該用 “What”，因為 “How is” 是詢問人的健康狀況或事物的狀態；而 “What is” 則是在詢問對人或事物的描述：
How’s the environment like near your house？
What’s the environment like near your house？
疑問 2：How many is the population of New York?
新同事從紐約調到香港的分公司，人家初來報到，你盡地主之誼、介紹過香港之後，出於好奇就請對方介紹一下紐約：“How many is the population in New York?” 對方側側頭，雖然勉強明白你要問甚麼，但就是怪怪的。
“Population”（人口）是一個數量，我們自然會用到 “How many” 來問。不過，“Population” 本身就是指人口，是一個集合名詞：一個城市，只會有一個「人口」。你可以問「人口」有多大，或者一個地方有多少人：
How many is the population of New York?
What is the population of New York?
How large is the population of New York?
How many people are there in New York?
另一個情況就是問價錢時，不少人都會問 “How much is the price?”。但其實 “How much” 本身已經有問價錢的意思，再加一個 “price” 在後面，就是重複兩者的意思：
How much is the price of this sofa?”
How much is this sofa?
What is the price of this sofa?
疑問 3：Where is the capital of Australia?
澳洲的首都在哪兒？這道本身問題就已經難到不少人了：不少人都會回答說悉尼 (Sydney)，但其實是坎培拉 (Canberra)。
言歸正傳，問一個國家的首都是在哪兒，應該用 “Where” 還是 “What”？其實兩個都說得通的，視乎你是想問甚麼：
- Where is the capital of Australia？（澳洲首都坎培拉的位置在哪兒？）
- What is the capital of Australia？（澳洲首都是哪一個城市？）
第一句是問坎培拉的位置，對方會回答你，“It is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory”（坎培拉在澳洲首都領地的北端。）如果你是想知道澳洲首都是哪兒，就應該用第二句了。
疑問 4：”What do you do?” VS “How do you do?”
Kelvin 在一次聯誼活動中，認識到一些在香港工作的外國人。為了打開話匣子，他就想問問對方的職業：“How do you do?” 對方先是一愕，然後就笑笑回說：“How do you do?” Kelvin 心想，問職業有甚麼好笑呢？原來已經鬧出笑話了。
問人職業應該是用“What do you do?”，而 “How do you do?” 其實是一種十分老派的打招呼方法，有如中文的「請多多指教」。要跟新認識的朋友打招呼，通常最簡單直接都是用 “Nice to meet you”。
